Jersey Boys is a documentary-styled jukebox musical originally inspired from a book by Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman. Under the direction of Des McAnuff, the musical production is accompanied with lyrics by Bob Crewe and music by Bob Gaudio. The true-to-life format of the musical brings back the show’s founding, its success and the final break-up of the 1960s Glam-n-Roll band The Four Seasons.
The musical is completely designed as four seasons, by which each season is discussed by any member of the band, who gives his own outlook on its music and history. The title Jersey Boys’ comes from a point that all members of the band are from New Jersey.
The characters of the musical including the original members of The Four Seasons were first performed on Broadway by John Lloyd Young as Frank Valli, Christian Hoff as Tommy DeVito, Daniel Reichard as Bob Gaudio, J. Jobert Spencer as Nick Massi, Jennifer Naimo as Mary Dilgado, Peter Gregus as Bob Crewe, Mark Lotito as Gyp DeCarlo, Sara Schmidt as Francine Valli, Erica Piccininni as Lorraine, Donnie Kehr as Norm Waxman and Michael Longoria as Joe Pesci.
In the year 2005, the musical production was officially launched on Broadway. Jersey Boys had a production in London’s West End and had two North American National Tours. The musical had also reached various places, including Melbourne, Las Vegas, Toronto, South Africa, Singapore, Netherlands, and other cities in Australia. After a few years on their journey on Broadway, the musical had won four 2006 Tony Awards, which includes the Best Musical Award, and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for the Best New Musical.
The songs included in the jukebox with two acts of the musical numbers are Big Girls Don’t Cry, December 1963 (Oh, What A Night), My Eyes Adored You, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Stay, Rag Doll, Sherry and Working My Way Back.
According to feedback from critics and fans, the show is something that anyone would enjoy watching. One of the responses had been said by Quentin Letts of The Daily Mail, quoted: “I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a big thumper of a show with fantastic songs.”
